‘Wife Began To Cry’: Police Charge Woman For Leaving Candlelit Candle in Park

NEW YORK — A Queens, New York, woman who was charged after she left a candle lit candle in her yard and later posted a photo of it on Facebook was arrested Friday and charged with criminal mischief, police said.

The NYPD said officers received a call at about 10:20 p.m.

Friday reporting a woman left a lighted candle in a yard on East 93rd Street.

Officers found the woman on the street and arrested her, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.

She has not been identified.

Police said she told officers she was leaving the candle in the yard because she felt it was an appropriate and symbolic act of prayer and a sign of respect for the deceased.

The suspect was arrested in a residential neighborhood near where the incident occurred and is being held at the Westchester County Correctional Facility on $2 million bail.
